Toast in the New Year for less

All Champagnes are sparkling wines, but not all sparkling wines are Champagnes. For something to be, considered true Champagne, it must come from a certain area of France,

Brut is a term that is, applied, to the driest Champagne and sparkling wines. Brut wines are drier which means they contain less residual sugar than those labeled "extra dry."

Spumante means, "foaming" and refers to all Italian sparkling wines including dry, sweet and semi-sweet varieties. The types of bubbles can vary in Spumante. Some Spumante have large bubbles that rise to the surface, then fizz and explode, while other Spumante have tiny, sparkling bubbles.

Champagne should be stored between 40 and 60 degrees Fahrenheit and may be kept upright or horizontally.

Ideally, Champagne should, be chilled. Place the bottle in a refrigerator for a couple of hours or in the freezer for 15 minutes. Finally, the classic way to chill a bottle of Champagne is to place it in an ice bucket, half filled with ice, half with water, for 20 minutes.

One 750ml bottle yields four to five glasses of wine.

January 1 newspaper promises the most coupons of the year

The New Year presents an opportunity to find more ways to save. If you have not jumped on the coupon-bandwagon the time is now.

Typically, the first Sunday of the New Year edition of The Columbus Dispatch Newspaper, will have the largest selection of coupons of the year.  Look for inserts from Smart Source, Red Plum, General Mills, and Proctor & Gamble. For beginners, and seasoned coupon users, this is the time to replenish your coupon supply.

Pick up and extra paper or two and ask friends and family who are not coupon users to share their coupon inserts with you. 

Stay organized. Pick up a few inexpensive poly file folders.  Categorize them by insert, mark the date on the front of the insert, and place in the file go to the next one. When you have time, go back, and sort through each insert and decide which coupons to use. 

Remember, coupons are money in your pocket, use them wisely and save more in the New Year.

Keep it or return it--how do you decide?

The beautifully adorned packages have been, opened, and now you need to decide what you will keep, and what will go back.  Invariably, most receive at least one gift that is a dud, or does not fit. 

Some may cringe at the thought of standing in long return lines, and pile the unwanted item in the closet to re-gift at some point.  Others rush off to exchange it for a wanted item.  I fall into the later, category.

If you do choose to return the item, do it in a timely fashion.  Without a receipt the store may only issue you credit for the lowest sale price of the item.  Keep the tags and packaging intact.

Inquire about a restocking fee on electronics.  You should not have to pay out of pocket to return a gift.

Make your trip to the store mid-week rather than on the weekend.  Lines will be shorter to make it easy to get in and get out.

Do not offend. If the gift giver will be offended if you are not wearing the hideous sweater they picked out for you, it may be better to grin and bear it, and wear it only in their presence.

Buyer beware of liquidation sales

There is a misconception among shoppers on the subject of "liquidation sales." A liquidation, sale is when a store or chain of stores decides to close because of hard economic times or other various reasons. To pay off their creditors, large chains usually hire a liquidation firm to handle the going-out-of-business process for them. Often, the liquidation firms buy up the remaining merchandise from the retailer and keep the profits for themselves.

The first step the liquidators take when they come in is to raise the price of the merchandise to manufactures' suggested retail prices, which usually are higher than the retail stores' prices. Liquidators also will bring in outside merchandise to offer at the going-out-of-business sale.

Liquidation firms will start the sales with "discounts," but often you will see discounts of just 10 percent or 15 percent off at first. They will wait until the last few days of the sale to slash prices. The downside to this is that the merchandise will be, picked over by then.

Going-out-of-business sales are a marketing ploy. Shoppers just assume they are getting a great bargain. The best time to snag a deal is in the weeks leading up to the liquidation sale. Shop around, and know the going retail and sale prices of the item you are purchasing so you can make an informed decision.
